OUR MISSION
The Assefa Foundation exists to close the gap between the healthcare people deserve and the healthcare they can access — wherever they are born.
We are a nonprofit organization focused on improving health outcomes in underserved communities in Ethiopia and East Africa. Our work is grounded in the belief that geography should never be a death sentence. A child born in rural Ethiopia deserves the same chance at a healthy life as a child born anywhere else in the world.
We pursue this mission through community health partnerships, targeted medical outreach, and sustainable programs that address the root causes of health inequality — not just its symptoms. Every effort we make is aimed at building something lasting: systems, relationships, and capacity that outlive any single intervention.
OUR APPROACH
We believe lasting health change requires more than supplies — it requires trust, infrastructure, and local ownership. Our work is built on three pillars:
Community-First Care
Every program begins with listening. We partner with local health workers, community leaders, and families to understand what care actually looks like on the ground — then build from there, not from the outside in.
Sustainable Systems
We don't build programs that disappear when we leave. We invest in training, capacity, and resources that communities can carry forward — so that health access grows over time, not just during a project cycle.
Targeted Medical Outreach
From mobile health clinics to maternal care support to essential medicine access, we deploy resources where they are most needed — reaching people who have historically been left out of formal health systems.
WHAT MAKES US DIFFERENT
Many organizations deliver aid. We build relationships. Here's what sets The Assefa Foundation apart:
Rooted in the Community
Our founder's deep personal connection to Ethiopia and East Africa means this work is never abstract. We operate with cultural context, earned trust, and on-the-ground knowledge that outside organizations often lack.
Mission-Funded, Not Donor-Dependent
Every product sold in our shop directly funds our programs. This model keeps us accountable to the mission — not to grant cycles or donor trends. When you shop with us, you're part of the solution.
Small Team, Real Impact
We keep overhead low and impact high. A lean, committed team means more of every dollar reaches the people who need it most — and every decision stays close to the mission.
WHO WE ARE
The Assefa Foundation is built on people who believe healthcare access is a human right — and are committed to doing the work to make it real.
Nahum Daniel — Founder & Executive Director
Nahum Daniel co-founded the Assefa Foundation to bridge critical gaps in medical and surgical care across rural Ethiopia. A graduate of the University of South Florida with a degree in Biomedical Science, he brings extensive clinical experience to his leadership role, drawing from his hands-on work as an ophthalmic technician and time spent as an intern at the forensic pathology office. The inspiration for the foundation stems from his firsthand experience navigating volatile regions like Gondar to successfully deliver vital medical supplies to underserved hospitals. Driven by the belief that high-quality healthcare should not be dictated by geography, Nahum is dedicated to expanding clinical reach to patients who might otherwise be left behind.
